ABC.com to launch online HD video
In July ABC.com will debut streaming high definition videos through the Internet. Standard HD material distributed through the cable networks eats roughly 12 – 19 mbs, while the online videos coming through the ABC service will be compressed between 850 kilobit and 2 megabit per second. But since they are using a completely new codec from On2 Technologies, the quality should be quite good anyway.
ABC.com’s HD channel, such as it is, will first feature a limited amount of content from its most popular primetime series, including Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty. When ABC launches its new season in September, the site will expand the HD lineup.
