Apple have patented an adapter that makes the smaller 8 cm sized discs compatible with slot in drives. I’m not sure why they need to ship smaller discs, but if they want to include software on CDs even in small packages like the new iPod nano box this can be an alternative. The patent was filed in May of 2006.
