History repeating itself?
After the announcement about the hacked XBOX 360 yesterday, I spent some time doing some research about the hacking of the original XBOX.
Launch date
Both the XBOX and the XBOX 360 was launched in the US in November, the XBOX in 2001 and the 360 in 2006. The demand for the 360 can’t be compared to the original XBOX though. Even now in March you might have to go around to a couple of stores before you can get ahold of one.
First illegal copy spread on the Internet
It’s of course much easier to just rip one of the game and publish it on the Internet and as you can see the first game for the XBOX 360 appeared a lot earlier than the original XBOX – only 1 month after the release – it took nearly 5 months before this happened on the original XBOX.
Is the just published video a hoax?
There’s a big discussion going on on the different XBOX hacker forums whether the video published yesterday is fake or not, and the strongest arguments for the video not being a fake is:
* The creator
One of the persons behind the video, The Specialist, has a strong background of hacking the XBOX.
* Laser movement
If you check out the video closely and take a look at the laser movement while reading the DVD-R disc – it behaves as if the disc was an original one.
* Disc spinning
The sound when the disc is spinning up sounds genuine – if you insert a backup DVD in an original XBOX 360 this wouldn’t happen.
So we might see a couple of mod chips hit the market in a month or two. Time will tell.
