O2 Cocoon – review
I have been playing around with the O2 Cocoon for three weeks now and here’s my verdict of this nice little phone. I even included a little video piece so you get to see the scrolling LED display in action. Check it out.
You might have seen my unboxing procedure already, but if you haven’t here it is: O2 Cocoon unboxing ceremony. As you can see the packaging is very nice!
Features
The O2 Cocoon will give you everything you expect from a modern music camera phone; 3G support, video & music playback, built-in RDS radio, 3.5 mm audio jack, Java support, Organizer, bluetooth – I don’t miss any features but I can’t say that I’m really impressed by the feature list either. It’s basically what you expect from a modern phone – except for one thing: the scrolling LED display that is hidden beneath the white plastic cover. It is what makes you wanna get this phone – it’s just so cool! Check out this 40 second video clip I shot to see what I mean.
As soon as you have unboxed the phone you’ll be ready to go in a minute.

Just dock your SIM card…

…close it…

‘
…and hit the ON button.

‘
When you have seen the amount of works that the design team has spent doing the packaging, the battery dock, and the LED display you would probably expect a cooler graphical user interfae. It’s in fact quite boring and doesn’t match the coolness of other parts of the phone – but it’s easy to use and solves your problems.

Music

The sound quality is excellent and if I would choose another thing about the O2 Cocoon that I really like it would be the music player.Even if you add 500 songs you can easily access them by using the built-in tune browser and the buttons on the side of the phone makes it easy to control your music.

If you change volume, start playing another tune or just pause, your command is scrolled on the LED display. If you’re looking for a phone that also doubles as a music player, the O2 Cocoon is a very good choice.

Phone
The O2 Cocoon is a really nice phone. Sound quality is perfect, and it’s easy to browse through your contacts, add new contacts, call missed numbers etc. It’s well put together and very easy to use. You will get the hang of it in minutes.
Camera
Don’t expect to do any serious photography with the O2 Cocoon’s camera since it’s pretty basic. In perfect conditions – daylight, clean lens and a target that is standing still – you can take really good photos, but as soon as the light conditions are bad your results will not be any good. Video quality is OK though, similar to the Sony Ericsson Cybershot and much worse than the Nokia video cameras.
Design
Here’s where the O2 Cocoon really shines. It’s such a beauty and it’s the details that makes it such a cool phone to use and be around. Imagine yourself having the O2 Cocoon lying in the table in front of you in a dark nightclub or pub, and someone sends you an SMS or calls you – the scrolling LED display will give you everyone’s attention for a while. Another cool design thing is the battery charger – or what O2 refers to as the nest. When you put your phone inside the charger it instantly turns into an alarm clock with a big clock on the display. I tried to shut it off but I actually don’t think you can – but you can at least dim it.
Overall
The O2 Cocoon is a nice phone, but most of all it’s a cool phone. Sound quality is perfect, both during calls and while listening to music. The camera is OK, it’s nowhere near the SonyEricssons 3.2 megapixel camera phones, but it give you nice video and good 2 megapixel photos. If it wasn’t for the scrolling LED display this phone wouldn’t get that much attention – but it’s a killer with it. And the combined dock, charger alarm clock is nothing but awesome! 7 out of 10.
