Review: Jens of Sweden MP-X

Jens of Sweden JOS MP-X

The MP-X is the latest player from the Swedish company Jens Of Sweden. The player is made in Korea, but the design is Swedish. The player is designed for extreme situations, which basically means that it won’t break if you wear it while it’s raining or drop it. Here’s Fosfor Gadgets review of the MP-X.

Unpacking the Jens of Sweden JOS MP-X

When you open the package you’ll find nothing but the MP3-player and a black USB-cable. The manual is located as a PDF-file on the player accompanied with a couple of demo songs, so you have to plug it in before you can read the manual (but who reads the manuals?) or just download it from Jensofsweden.com.

As with other products from Jens of Sweden the MP3 player comes without a charger or ear phones. The standard earphones, Koss Spark Plug and the white charger is an extra $24, and you can of course choose other headphones to come with the package (ranging from the Koss SparkPlug – $10.69 to the Shure E5c – $375.37).

The general feeling of the player is that it can take a punch or two and still will be going strong. The printed Jens of Sweden logo rubbed off during the first day of testing though.

Filling the player up with songs is easy. Just plug it in with the USB-cable and start dragging your folders to the player. Transferring 100MB of songs takes just under 40 seconds – nothing to complain about here. Robust and quick using USB 2.0 of course.

Playing your songs is also very straightforward. Just plug in your headphones, press play and start listening. You have access to 5 different equalizer modes – Normal, Rock, Jazz, Classic, Pop and Live – but I honestly think it would have been better by having just a loudness/bass boost mode. Getting it back to normal equalizer mode can be quite hard when you don’t have a display to look at – until I read the manual and found out that the equalizer is set back to normal when you hold the EQ-button.

Bells and whistles
Nothing special to write about here – it can play MP3, WMA, ASF and OGG files, a 12 hours battery life, USB 2.0 High-Speed file transfer, working temperature is between -5°C – 50°C, and it can take some rain. The big clip on the back of the player is strong, and it’s easy to attach on your shorts or shirt.

Final verdict?
The Jens of Sweden MP-X is a nice player, and it’s a perfect match if you want a small player accompanying you when you workout. The build and sound quaility is excellent, but If you’re used to having a display it can be hard getting used to navigating through your files just using the back and forward buttons, especially if you have packed the 1GB version full.

$92.48 for the 1GB version
$82.14 for the 512MB version

Wow, a whole review about a “sound product” with no mentioning at all about the actual sound quallity of it. Hillarious! ;)

“The player is made in Korea, but the design is Swedish.”

Er… Do you REALLY believe this yourselves?

It’s totally wrong. This player, along with every other player marketed by JoS, is both designed and manufactured in Korea. They’re all marketed by several companies under various names, JoS is but one of them.

The only thing that’s “Swedish” about them is that the trademark contains the word “Sweden”, and thus they’re more expensive than when you buy the exact same products with a different label from someone else.

I’ve had one for about a year and a half. Died once completely, and Jens replaced it no questions asked. It’s dying again, this time it’s the battery. No longer holds charge… and no response yet from Jens even though it’s still under guarantee. Grr.

Anyone replace the battery themselves? I don’t even know how to get the sucker open… :(
