Rising Sun – Larry Ellison’s yacht

Rising Sun

Larry Ellison’s boat is visiting Stockholm, Sweden, so I decided to go look at this truly enormous yacht. Come inside!

Many sites has reported this to be the ‘world’s largest yacht’, but it’s actually the second largest in the world according to The World’s 100 Largest Yachts – 2005. But anyway, this yacht is enormous!

Rising Sun was meant to be only 120 meters long, but at some point, Larry changed his mind and decided that it should be 138 meters instead. And even though it’s not officially stated anywhere, it’s because he wanted to have a bigger boat than Paul Allen of Microsoft’s Octopus, 128 meters.

The boat is built by Lürssen in Bremen, Germany, and is constructed by Jon Bannenberg, and has a total living space of 8 000 square meters – quite impressive, or what do you say? And why is the boat in Stockholm? Well, Larry Ellison is fond of sailing, and owns the american team for Americas cup, which takes place in Sweden between August 23 to September 3 2005. Larry Ellison will come and watch the competition for a couple of days, and wanted a nice place to stay at… Hehe

Some other facts about Larrys yacht The Rising Sun:

Length: 452.75ft (138 m) long
Cruising speed: 28 knots
Four diesels giving an output of 48 000 horsepower.
Production cost: US$200+ (In fact, it’s for sale.)
Total living space: 8 000 square meters.
Huge inside swimming pool
Extensive wine cellar
A cinema
Basketball court that doubles as a helicopter pad
Suites for 16 guests
82 rooms on five storeys
Space for private submarine

Larry Ellison is the ninth richest man in the world and founder and CEO of Oracle. He’s worth around $18 billion, so he can afford to have a boat of this magnituted – even if it costs over $13 million each year to just maintain it…

Rising Sun is a beatiful yacht and is very
luxurious, but Paul Allen’s ”Octopus” still slides first, to me. Photos need a little more detail in each shot.

I think the Rising Sun yacht is a beautiful creation of what has been well thought out when built by a mastermind owner as well. It is timeless and will remain a symbol of class for the new owners as well. I might consider putting an offer to Mr. Ellison if the price is right.

Based on the few pictures I have see, the lines and proportions of the Rising Sun do not flow. It looks like a cruise ship. Larry, check with me before you build the next one.

Larry Ellison can eat a big fat dick. Hey Larry! why not try donating some of your riches to the worlds needy instead of trying to impress the world with your giant yacht. Trying to compensate for some other shortcoming perhaps Lar? You and your oversized boat make me sick, why dont you go give a hundred million bucks to help with aids in africa like the honorable Mister Gates. Wake up Larry, vanity is not a virtue

My wife and I were in St. Thomas on March 7th on a cruise. The Rising Sun was docked next to us in port. The yacht was huge, over half of the size of the cruise ship we were on. The yacht was an impressive sight to see in person. I was able to take many pictures from the top deck of the cruise ship. By the way, Seth, get over it, the man can do what ever he wants to with his money just like you can do what ever you want to with your money.

I think larry Ellison is a succesful salesman in oracle but doesnot know about fashion and style, here in Mexico we call those persons “NACO” Carlos Peralta worths only 1 billion much much less than Mr. Ellison and owns “Princess Mariana” a beatiful yatch with style, he knows how to spend money.
Elisson owned “Enigma” who bought it also from a mexican and sold it for that ugly mega calipso looking boat not yatch.
    what a waist of cash.

Saw the yacht in Trieste and my initial reaction was: Which cruise line is this ?
Am sorry to say this, the yacht might be beautiful on the inside, but the exterior is horrible.
It looks like a cruise liner, it is as big as a small cruise liner and it has space on board like a cruise liner.
This designer had apparently no fantasy, used basically the same windows over and over again, no flowing lines, nothing. I passed Rising Sun in the car, on my way to the center of Trieste, and I did not get the urge to turn back and take picture.

On the other hand, saw Pelorus last year, and that remains (at least to me) one of the most beautiful yachts ever built.

    Norbert,

You have to be kidding, “the designer has no imagination”.

The late Jon Bannenberg is a legend, the most unique, avant guard and innovative designer of his time (and more than that).
He was multi-talented, at that (music, painting, architecture, design…) and a true gentleman.
All his yachts are beautiful and in some way original. He had more talent and imagination in his little fingernail than most other people would have if they lived million years.

Not to mention that anyone who had ever met him vouch that he was the person of ultimate manners, charisma, kindness and generosity (very rare qualities to find combined with superb talent in one person). He was a true renneisance man.

You should do your homework first before writing such nonsense.

Rising Sun may not be to your taste, but accusing the late Jon Bannenberg of not having the imagination is pure travesty. You really should use your brain a bit more before writing stupid comments.

    Jon Bannenberg stays

    P.S.
Let’s not forget that the designer can only do so much, they ultimately have to follow the owners wishes when designing the yacht. So, if the yacht is huge and cruise-ship like, it is because the owner wanted it to be like that, I mean, it is hard to make look such a huge yacht look like a dingy, isn’t it?

When I first saw the Rising Sun I have been remembered to the boats in Amsterdam, where tourists where shown the Grachten. All this big fill glas windows. It has been ugly.

But than I had a nearer look on the yacht. It is not as plump as some arabian battleship yachts, looking like wide potts. The RS is much more racy. And has some interesting details.

But, yes, it’s true: There’s no accounting for taste

Seth La Rosa might want to consider that this yacht creates a lot of jobs, and they are good, fun jobs that a lot of people would love to have. Yacht captain, yacht crew, yacht designer, etc, etc. I’ll bet hundreds, if not thousands, of people worked on custom assembly and craftsmanship for this yacht while it was being built.

I believe the KKMI yard in the San Francisco area is run by people with a great sense of humor, and they service at least a few of his yachts. They once added in their terms and conditions that you would be exempted from fees if you were abducted by a UFO during your boat’s stay in their facility. “Proof of abduction required”. They must have gotten a lot of people using that excuse, since the clause was tragically removed later on :-( ). I’m sure there are quite a few people at that yard who owe their jobs to the nearly full time endeavour of keeping Larry’s yachts running smoothly.

Personally, I think this yacht looks a bit sterile. I love the old-fashioned wood polished teak look, and if I ever get a yacht it will be all over there. True, teak is a pain to maintain, but with the crew required to run this yacht, putting some of them on teak maintenance detail doesn’t sound like much of a hardship

unfortunately, in my humble and honest opinion, the rising sun is one of the most unattractive eyesores in the maritime world; i would be ashamed to call it mine, and i would’ve sold it for a loss as soon as possible after taking one very good look at it. cold, boxy, the epitome of ’square’, a gross display of immature wealth, downright ugly, not in any way in line with any sort of natural phenomena; it doesn’t flow, like water does, and there is the point: it goes against the very nature of nature itself. it should be given to charity, converted into some type of noble, helpful in some way vessel, or maybe sunk, as to create an artificial reef, and an interesting dive spot…i could go on and on….i have felt that way ever since the first second i saw it…on the other hand, larry’s japanese-style residential compound is absolutely divine, and gets all my love and respect….props to the house, lar……..

We saw Rising Sun in March 2009 in the Tobago Cays in the Grenadines. From a distance we all thought it was a cruiseship. Even closeup it is mammoth. It can be disputed whether it is beautiful, but there is no dispute that it is big! Wow!

Rumor was that the actor Hugh Jackman had chartered the yacht. I don’t know if it was true.

Got some good photos of this boat in corfu last Sunday (9th August 2009) She was at anchor 400 mtrs. from the Rothschild estate off the North East coat of the island about 10 minutes South (on water ) from Kassiopi. We saw photos in the press showing Peter Mandelson (the employment minister in the UK) standing on the deck, we just saw her crew cleaning the windows and some “guests” having great fun on the jet skis off her stern.

Here in Lake Tahoe NV my husband will be building Mr. Ellison’s home in about a month for 4 years. HOW CRAZY IS THIS MAN’S MONEY?! Wonderful way to keep a job!
